003 (2019-2020) Common Admission Test (CAT)

                Career Guidance Cell informs that Common Admission Test or CAT is a management aptitude test conducted by the IIMCAT for admission to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and over 1000 other B-schools across India. The CAT exam is conducted by one of the IIMs on behalf of IIMCAT, in online mode at various test centres in over 156 cities. In 2018, about 2.41 lakh candidates applied for the CAT exam. The number of applications received was the highest since 2010. CAT 2019 will be conducted by IIM Kozhikode.

CAT Eligibility Criteria
·         The candidate must possess a bachelor's degree with at least 50 per cent marks or equivalent CGPA (45 per cent for SC, ST and PWD/DA category) from a recognised board or university
·         The candidate must havecompleted professional degree (CA/CS/ICWA)with required percentage
·         Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification or awaiting result are also eligible to apply for CAT exam 2019

CAT 2019 Selection Procedure

IIM Admission Process
CAT selection procedure for all the IIMs includes the following:
1.    Screening of candidates on the basis of their CAT 2019 score
2.    Written Ability Test/Group Discussion/Personal Interview (WAT/GD/PI)
3.    Computation of composite score followed by final selection
Non-IIM Admission Process
Institutes accepting CAT score other than IIMs also conduct GD/PI for admission to their MBA/PGDM programmes.

CAT 2019 - Overall and Sectional Time Limit
CAT exam has sectional time limit, which means the candidates will not be allowed to choose any section to start with or switch from one section to another. They will have to follow the CAT 2019 question paper chronologically, from section 1-3. The chronology of the sections will be:
·         Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension,
·         Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning 
·         Quantitative Aptitude.
Aspirants must remember that they will have to complete each section within one hour and the moment one hour is complete, the screen will automatically move to the next section. No changes or corrections will be allowed at a later stage.

CAT Marking Scheme
It is important to know the CAT marking scheme before attempting the exam so that you can select which questions to answer and which ones to skip.
·         Total marks of CAT 2019 paper will be 300
·         Each question will carry 3 marks
·         There will be negative marking of 1 each for a wrong answer
·         There will be no deduction of marks in case a candidate chooses not to attempt a given question
·         Some questions in each section may not be of multiple choice type, thus the answers will have to be typed on the screen

Important Points About CAT Exam Pattern

·         Use of basic onscreen calculator will be allowed for computation
·         An onscreen clock will help candidates keep a check on time
·         A rough paper will be provided for rough work, which has to be submitted at the exam centre as soon as the exam gets over
·         The candidates will not be allowed to start solving the question paper before time
·         All the computer screens will switch on at the same time
·         Candidates must sit in their designated area, if found sitting anywhere else, he/she will be debarred from the exam

The CAT 2018 question paper saw a few changes in the pattern of questions especially in the Quantitative Ability section.
·         The Quantitative Ability section was difficult. In fact, more difficult than CAT 2017.
·         The Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning section of CAT 2018 was of moderate difficulty and the VARC section was the easiest.

What's New in CAT 2019 Exam?

·         No changes have been made in CAT exam pattern or syllabus for 2019. The question paper will have 3 sections with a total of 100 questions from Quantitative Ability (QA), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC).
·         Last year, IIMCAT had made a few changes in the exam pattern of CAT. In CAT 2018, there were more TITA-type questions as compared to MCQs. TITA questions meaning - questions require you to type in your answer in the text box provided, hence, they are also referred to as Type in the Answer (TITAquestions.

Topics under Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension

Verbal Ability (VA): Key Points
·         Number of questions asked range from 7-11.
·         Sectional weightage of this section is 7-11 per cent.
·         The type of questions are all non-MCQs, which means the candidates have to type in the answer (TITA).
·         There is no negative marking in VA since the questions are non-MCQ type.
·         Types of questions range from para-jumbles, out of context sentence in a para, error correction in a para, vocabulary usage and sentence completion to analogies and critical reasoning.
Reading Comprehension (RC): Key Points
·         Number of questions asked range from 24-28.
·         Sectional weightage of this section is 24-28 per cent
·         The type of questions are all MCQs, hence there is negative marking of -1
·         CAT has a mix of RC passages, on an average 4-3 long passages and 2-3 short passages.
·         According to the trend of the last three years, long passages are of 900 word and short passages are of 600 words.
·         Topics of these RCs range from science, history, politics, environment, society to literature, mythology and abstract topics.

Q: For how many times is CAT exam held in a year?
A: CAT exam is conducted online once every year. The exam is held in two sessions - forenoon and afternoon. The forenoon session is held from 9 am to 12 pm and the afternoon session is held between 2 pm and 5 pm.
Q: What is the application fee of CAT exam?
A: The application fee for CAT exam is Rs 1,900 for General category and Rs 950 for reserved category students.
Q: Is there an age limit to appear in CAT exam?
A: No, there is no age limit to appear in the exam. Any candidate who is a Graduate or is in the final year of Graduation is eligible to apply for CAT.
Q: What are the scholarship schemes in IIMs that candidates appearing in CAT can avail of upon admission?
A: IIMs provide scholarships to meritorious candidates and the ones belonging to economically weaker section. 
CAT 2019 exam centres will be allotted to candidates on the basis of test cities selected in the application form. CAT 2019 will be conducted at over 4000 exam centres in 156 cities across India. The aspirants will be given the option to choose up top four cities according to their preference for allottment of CAT exam centre. 
Selecting CAT 2019 Test Cities: Key Points
·         The CAT application form has a field in which the aspirants are supposed to fill their choice of preferred cities for exam centre allotment.
·         The candidates can select up to four cities from the list of 147.
·         Selection must be done in order of preference starting from first.
·         Test city is allotted based on availability.
·         If the first preferred city is not available, the second preference will be allotted to the candidate.
